Tom Van Achter graduated magna cum laude as Master of Law at the University of Leuven in 2002. In 2012, he received additional training as a curator, after which he attended courses in transport insurance, organised by the Belgian Association on Transport Law, in 2013-14.

Tom was admitted to the Antwerp bar in 2002 and started working for elegis – Huybrechts,  Engels, Craen & Partners that same year. He has been a partner of the law firm since 2011. In 2016 Tom was admitted to the list of Supreme Court attorneys in criminal matters.

Tom specialises in insurance and liability law, maritime and transport law, international commerce law, in which his focus lies on international transactions and intermediaries (agents, concessions and distributions) as well as insolvency issues.

Tom serves a diversified, both national and international clientele, among whom various domestic and foreign insurance companies, carriers/shippers, logistic operators, traders and various public authorities.

He is a member of the Belgian Association for Maritime Law as well as a member of AJIA (“Assocation des Jeunes Avocats”) and Universha Antwerpen. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal for International Trade and Transport Law (ITT) and a (co-) author of various legal publications:

Tom regularly attends national and international conferences and provides services in Dutch, French, English and German.
